Pokémon Garnet (Japanese: ポケットモンスターガーネット Pocket Monsters Garnet) and Pokémon Jade (Japanese: ポケットモンスタージェイド Pocket Monsters Jade) are the primary paired versions of Generation VIII. The games are available on the New Nintendo 3DS. The games take place in the new Canino region.

The paired versions were released worldwide (except for select countries) on August 19, 2016 and are available for both retail sale and download. All copies of the game are playable in all seven of the languages that the Pokémon games are released in: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Chinese.

Features

National Pokédex

An additional number has now been added to the National Pokédex.

Duskull Pokédex

The player's Pokédex is a special model that can be inhabited by a Duskull, called the Duskull Pokédex. Through the Pokédex, Rotom can speak human languages. The Pokédex also acts as a real-time map on the bottom screen on the player's New Nintendo 3DS, showing the player's location, places of interest, and recommended destinations based on conversations made with NPCs.

New forms

Canino Forms

Main article: Regional variant

Some Pokémon species have uniquely adapted to the microclimates of the Canino region, becoming what is known as a regional variant of their species. These variant species take on different forms from those of their species in other regions, including a different appearance, Abilities, and more. A Caninish variant of a species is known as its Canino Form.

Light type

Main article: Light (type)

One new type has been introduced, the Light type. This type was added to balance the Dark type, which was previously weak only to Bug, Fairy, and Fighting. Light-type attacks are strong against Dark, Fairy, and Poison types, resisted by Rock, Ghost, and Steel types, and unaffected by the Psychic type; Light-type Pokémon are weak to Psychic- and Ghost-type attacks, resist Poison-, and Fighting-type attacks, and are immune to Dark- and Fairy-type attacks.

Gyms

Garnet and Jade feature Gyms just as every other main series title. In Canino, the Gym Leaders are George (Poison), Kipper (Fighting), Dory (Water), Tyrone (Ground), Confuscius (Psychic), Kal (Ghost), Harvey (Dark), and Smasher Lee (Dragon).

Elite Four and Champion

Just as in Unova and Kalos, the Elite Four can be battled in any order. After battling all four, a path to the Champion is unlocked. The Elite Four members are Lynch (Grass), Chilton (Ice), Terri (Light), and Bella (Fairy). After beating all four Elite Four members, the player will face the Champion, Cotty, who uses a variety of types along with a Crobat which can use a Z-Move and a Dragonite which can Mega Evolve.
